15 people developed pneumonia and four sadly passed away amid WHO warning
A warning has been issued to Brits travelling to Europe this year due to an outbreak of 'bird chlamydia', also known as psittacosis. The World Health Organisation has called the rise in cases 'unusual'.
However, in countries like Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Denmark and Sweden, the numbers are much higher. In 2023, Austria reported 14 confirmed cases and four more have been reported this year up until March 4. Denmark usually sees up to 30 human cases each year, mostly from pet birds or racing pigeons, reports Gloucestershire Live.Out of the 17 cases in Denmark that resulted in hospitalisation, 15 people developed pneumonia and four sadly passed away.
In severe cases, it can lead to pneumonia, a condition where the lungs get inflamed. People identified as having psittacosis often take antibiotics to handle the infection. Most folks recover quickly if they begin taking antibiotics soon after falling sick.
