The Canary Islands are cracking down on tourists trying to take souvenirs from beaches If you’re going on holiday to the Canary Islands, specifically Lanzarote or Fuerteventura, you might want to be careful while you’re on the beach. Anybody who picks up sand, stones and rocks from protected beaches there is at risk of being slapped with a huge fine, since it’s against the law to do so. It’s no small sum either.

As a result, Brits found taking the popcorn shaped stones from the beach will be charged with a minor offence, which equates to between £128 to £512 in penalties. However, those who take a large amount could face the eyewatering maximum fine. This comes after complaints by residents that the Canary Islands were at breaking point, due to the amount of tourists it was seeing every year.
