Spain is facing a crisis as the country is experiencing one of its worst droughts in 200 years
Spain is bracing for a potential crisis as new swimming pool regulations - brought on by one of the worst droughts in 200 years - spark fears that British holidaymakers may cancel their trips. Particularly affected is Catalonia, including Barcelona, where severe water shortages have led to emergency measures such as pool closures.
Despite occasional rainfall, the Andalucia region continues to struggle with a prolonged dry spell. Some towns and villages have even implemented night time water supply and pressure restrictions, significantly impacting visitor accommodations. In popular areas such as Costa del Sol and Malaga city, local councils have imposed bans on using drinking water to fill swimming pools. Consequently, raw water from wells or groundwater must be utilised, necessitating additional filtering in the pools and resulting in closures that can last from one to three days.
"I have many clients waiting to hear from me as they're deciding whether to come or not. If there is no pool, they are going to change their destination this year. We are having cancellations and we are going to have more. It's the first time our well has gone dry in over 13 years," one local from Seville previously warned.
