Turkey's struggling tourism industry faces new obstacles as activists say British holidaymakers are boycotting the country's resorts

According to animal welfare campaigners, there's a growing movement to shun Turkey's tourism sector due to large-scale canine culls.

With the country's hospitality venues already feeling the pinch this summer as domestic travellers show preference to Greece, courtesy of a visa deal for same-day entry, Turkish hospitality is bracing itself for a new setback. British tourists, fuming over the controversial tactics sanctioned by President Tayyip Erdogan and his AKP party, are reportedly cancelling their holidays and vowing never to return.

Activists Hayley Ashford and Bagdat Ozarslan have spoken out about the severe implications of the legislation that has seen many animals brutally exterminated."What's happening in Turkey is an absolute medieval barbaric massacre," Ozarslan shared with the Express, detailing the horrific treatment of dogs including mass killings and burials. "They are chopping dogs up, making these mass graves and just chucking them in. It is just horrendous.

With grim reports and footage coming from activists across Turkey, the 'Boycott Turkey' campaign has been initiated. Turkish lawmakers squeezed through a piece of legislation in July intending to remove around 4 million stray dogs from the streets, reports Nottinghamshire Live. The law states that any animals displaying aggressive behaviour or suffering from incurable diseases will be euthanised, and municipal mayors who fail to implement the policies could face two years in prison.
