Beachgoers have been warned to be careful when heading to the beach this summer, with one popular activity adored by families carrying with it a potentially deadly risk

As many of us gear up for our summer holidays in the coming days, the allure of warmer weather may tempt many to exchange their bustling inland lives for the coast, to fully enjoy the seaside both domestically and overseas. However, while pebble-strewn beaches, clear seas and vast stretches of sand might seem like an ideal way to spend a relaxed afternoon, experts have issued a stern warning about a common beach activity that could potentially be fatal.

This grave warning follows the tragic death of a seven year old girl in Florida earlier this year, who was buried alive when a five-foot hole she and her brother had dug caved in on her. Despite the heroic efforts of several bystanders to save her, the hole continued to collapse, with more sand pouring in until escape became impossible.

Unlike avalanches, creating an air pocket for survival until rescue is impossible due to the weight of the sand. Therefore, rescuing someone trapped in sand often becomes a race against time to prevent a deadly tragedy.
