Research revealed 88 per cent of UK adults admit to wasting water, with the average person using 140 litres per day - despite thinking they are only using 49 litres
A survey of 3,000 adults revealed that 88 per cent admit to wasting water - with 34 per cent still leaving the tap on when brushing their teeth - and 38 per cent spending longer in the shower than is needed. Over two in 10 fill up the whole kettle when making one cup of tea and 35 per cent rinse plates before they go in the dishwasher.
Switching to a low-flow shower head could save £94 per year and shaving just three minutes off a shower could free up £61 annually - with energy bill savings on top. Meanwhile, simply turning the tap off while brushing your teeth could return £37 back to your wallet and fixing a leaking toilet could save £236 annually.
A consumer poll found that 72 per cent are concerned about upcoming increases in their water bills. Despite this, one in five rarely or never consider their water usage, and over a quarter are unaware if their billing is metered. Adele Farah, 35, collaborated with her father, Chris Donaldson, 66, an architectural engineer, to construct a greenhouse equipped with a tank for recycling water. Once the tank is filled, they gather the water in a watering can and utilise it for watering plants both inside and outside, as well as cleaning their dogs' crate.
