The town of Oeiras has become the latest place in Portugal to bring in the fee, which will come into effect from August 15
British holidaymakers planning a trip to Portugal should take note of a new charge that's set to come into effect next week. Starting from August 15, the coastal town of Oeiras will introduce a tourist tax.
The local council in Oeiras has explained that the tax is intended to "ensure a counterpart for the enjoyment of a set of activities and investments promoted by the municipality of Oeiras, related to tourism".
Enforcement of the tax will be carried out by RAPTOR, an acronym for Acts of Regulation of Administrative Permissions, Taxes, and Other Revenues. Typically, this fee will be collected by the accommodation providers and is required to be paid in cash upon arrival, reports the Mirror. For instance, in the Algarve, visitors aged 13 and above are charged €2 per night for stays in hotels, campsites, caravan parks, and local accommodations from April 1 to October 31. The tax drops to €1 per night from November to March, with exemptions for guests staying for medical treatment or those who fall ill during their visit.
