Nicky told how he was unable to open up to his adoptive parents about the abuse because he knew they were pushing themselves financially to send him to the fee-paying school.
Presenter Nicky Campbell has told of the harrowing physical abuse he endured at the hands of his sadist teacher back at Edinburgh Academy in the 70s and 80s.
Mr Campbell also told how he and other pupils were often made to bend over the teacher's desk and were struck with a wooden paddle called a clacken, which is used in a ball game at the school. In his evidence, he also recalled an incident when Mr Brownlee was unable to find a clacken - which can be up to 18in long.Top news stories today Mr Campbell was facing the class at the time and said he began winking and making faces as his classmates erupted into laughter, which he now describes as a "glorious moment of defiance".
