Morristown defeated Sparta in a highly-regarded NJAC matchup between two Top 10-level teams.
Morristown put together one of the most impressive turnaround seasons in recent girls volleyball memory in 2023. Going from a 13-win club in 2022 to winning 23 consecutive contests last fall, the Colonials found success in droves.
It’s difficult to accept that a team would walk out of Morristown’s gym with a loss already on Day 1, considering the talent and coaching savviness on both ends. “Playing Sparta on Opening Day has been our focus all summer. They are an incredible team and we knew we had our work cut out against them,” Morristown’s Gwen Atkins said. “I think we had the proper amount of time to be prepped for this match, which erased any nerves.”We thought Atkins was a heavy hitter in 2023. She’s turned it up a few notches for her senior year, slamming eight kills in the win, including seven in the second set.
“Mary did us a huge favor by playing opposite last season. That shows that she is a team player, but she really shines on the outside. We saw that today in a great start to the year for her,” Hormaza said.
