Born Mark Anthony Myrie in Kingston, the singer took the name Buju from a childhood nickname from his chubby infancy and Banton from his beloved deejay and mentor Burro Banton.Banton is also affectionately known as Gargamel, a moniker he earned for looking a bit like the Smurfs character of the same name.At 51 years old, Banton didn’t miss a beat in his energetic sets, which were about 90 minutes long each night.Banton sold out Long Island’s UBS Arena both evenings.
