Two admit conspiracy to spy while three others deny the charge
Two Bulgarian nationals have admitted in court to being part of a Russian spying ring led by Jan Marsalek, the fugitive former chief operating officer of Wirecard. The pleas from Orlin Roussev, 46, and Biser Dzhambazov, 43, are being reported on Thursday for the first time at the start of a trial at the Old Bailey involving three other alleged accomplices.
Bellingcat journalist Christo Grozev, Roman Dobrokhotov, founder of the Insider, a Russia-focused media outlet, Kazakh national Bergey Ryskaliyev and Kirill Kachur, former Investigative Committee of Russia member, were among the individuals targeted. The ring also allegedly planned to stage a demonstration outside the Kazakhstan embassy to create the impression Russia had intelligence on those responsible to curry favour with the country’s intelligence services.
