Grace Richardson, 19, was subjected to homophobic slurs and accused of being 'too skinny' after coming out four years ago
A student who was bullied at school over her sexuality is bidding to become the first openly gay Miss England after reaching the national finals. Grace Richardson, 19, was picked on by cruel classmates and subjected to homophobic slurs after she came out to her family and peers four years ago.
The musical theatre student at the Leicester College of Performing Arts, said: “I was 15 when I came out, it was during lockdown. My family was really supportive. I didn’t feel any stress coming out and then I came out online to everyone at school. "People would also comment on my weight and how I looked. I was always slim growing up, my entire family was. The bullying died down before I came out and then it got worse. I became invisible. When I came out they didn’t like it. Lots of people saw me as different to the rest. I wasn’t a sheep and went with my own personality."
"I want to inspire but I want to spread inclusion. I think my LGBTIQQ story also ties into my other messages because I’m combating gender-based violence. In my experience, it was a lot of boys who were targeting me. I want to create a safe space for women to express who they are.
