World Refugee Day was established by the United Nations in 2000 and was first celebrated on June 20, 2001. The day aims to raise awareness of the plight of refugees, and recognizes the courage of people forced to flee their home country.

The Bullock Texas State History Museum and Austin Refugee Roundtable hosted the annual celebration in Austin from 11 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. According to, there are currently more than 100 million people throughout the world who have been forcibly displaced from their homes. Visitors were able to take part in activities such as a learning game that showed the journey of a refugee.

Those who attended the event were also taught what causes people to flee their country initially, what it is like in a refugee camp, the process for applying for resettlement, and what the experience is like for refugees coming to the United States. There was also a federal court ceremony at 12 p.m. that completes the process of becoming a United States citizen, it was held in the museum's Texas Spirit Theater.
