Grieves, a transient, and Fee, from Gateshead, both denied 13 charges but were found guilty and received 13 and 11-year sentences respectively. Newcastle Crown Court revealed that the duo targeted an elderly couple known to Grieves. Frances Anderson was at home with her husband, John, when two men forcibly entered their home demanding money. Mrs. Anderson became so distressed during the harrowing half-hour ordeal that she experienced an epileptic seizure, injuring herself in the process. To further hinder their victims, Grieves and Fee severed the telephone cables, preventing the couple from calling for help. The court learned that Grieves knew the couple's vulnerability as his sister was married to their son. He targeted them specifically after hearing rumors within the family that they kept a substantial amount of cash at their residence. Both victims had a history of heart problems, and two weeks after the attack, Mrs. Anderson suffered a stroke, which her family attributes to the traumatic experience. Grieves was also convicted of three counts of handling stolen goods and three counts of theft of number plates. He was, however, acquitted of four burglary charges and two counts of motor vehicle theft. Fee was convicted of one count of handling stolen goods and one count of theft of number plates, while being acquitted of the remaining 10 charges. During his sentence, Grieves was transferred to HMP Garth near Leyland. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has confirmed that the 38-year-old died in prison on January 19, 2023, prompting an investigation. All prison deaths are investigated by the ombudsman to ensure that any concerns regarding the deceased's care in custody are addressed, and any lessons learned are highlighted and shared. The ombudsman will also examine any trends in prisoner deaths at Garth and attempt to speak with Grieves' next of kin to inquire about any potential concerns
