McGill’s will no longer run any services in West Lothian from next month

West Lothian’s bus services should be brought under public control, it has been argued, after it emerged McGills Eastern Scottish is set to pull its services from the county.

Services are set to disappear in December after McGills Eastern Scottish announced the end of all bus services in the county. The 21 and 23 services which were partly council subsidised earlier this year, from Blackridge and Greenrigg, are also in the cull. Blackridge’s Independent Councillor Stuart Borrowman said: “It’s a devastating blow, especially for Blackridge.

The number of bus journeys in Greater Manchester dropped from 355,000,000 at the time of deregulation to 182,000,000 in 2019, while the number in London, where services were not deregulated, “roughly doubled” in the same period.“The mantra that the market is the answer to everything has been disproved by bus deregulation,” he added.

“I understand that this means that all their commercial bus routes will cease from this date and that McGill’s will not run any commercial bus services in West Lothian. “However, when I met McGill’s after their takeover of services from First Bus in December 2022, they advised of their plans to stabilise bus services in West Lothian. These plans included employing more drivers and ensuring reliable services that are needed by locals.
