Speculation has been mounting that the project may not be delivered in full
Nottinghamshire businesses are said to be 'exasperated' by uncertainty about the future of HS2 as speculation mounts that the project may not come to the county. The Prime Minister has refused to comment on claims that the Government is due to announce the scrapping of HS2's second phase.
The claims arose after a Government document was photographed with details of a "savings table", showing the costs of each part of the HS2 project north of Birmingham.
It was reported that an announcement scrapping HS2 north of Birmingham could be made this week, but some believe this is unlikely given the Conservative Party Conference gets underway this weekend in Manchester - a city that would be particularly aggrieved by the project being scrapped. One Nottinghamshire Conservative MP said he didn't believe an announcement was even likely immediately after the party conference.
"It doesn't really matter. As long as the trains reach the destinations we wanted them to reach in the kind of timeframes that we wanted." Current plans would see the HS2 network stopping at East Midlands Parkway on the eastern leg, but HS2 trains reaching other stations including Nottingham, Derby and Chesterfield through an electrification of the Midland Main Line.
