This week in our Guardian archive series, we have an image of Wast Water in the Lake District in August 1999, captured by Don McPhee
Described by Wordsworth as “long, stern and desolate”, Wast Water is the deepest lake in the Lake District. It is surrounded by the peaks of Red Pike, Kirk Fell, Great Gable and Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain, in one of the remotest parts of the national park. Here, boulders have broken away from the area’s famous screes – steep slopes with loose stones – foregrounded by the Guardian photographer Don McPhee.
