“I feel this is a catastrophe waiting to happen and no one’s doing anything about it” David has been left in limbo, struggling to sell or remortgage because a lender will not lend on a property or building deemed a fire risk
“I feel this is a catastrophe waiting to happen and no one’s doing anything about it,” says David, who has asked for his name to be changed as he is in dispute with the developer and the building’s managing agent.
Most of the flats in the building are owned by property investors, which has made it harder to form a collective group of voices to help solve the problems. David has managed to get hold of owners’ details by paying to access the deeds on land registry, but has not been able to contact them all. Most of the flats are lived in by tenants, so you can’t just go and speak to them. Some owners are still unaware of the problem.
If the building is left as a fire risk, with no remedial action taken, then the local authority can condemn the building and the value of his flat could be worthless. In the meantime, no lenders will touch a property with question marks over its safety. “I do regret ever making the decision to buy this flat. It’s turned into a second job, arranging meetings, writing letters and trying to get help. There are many other leaseholders across the country trapped in situations like mine. The Government seem to be sweeping it under the carpet and hoping it becomes a problem for whoever is in power after the next general election.
