This is the largest invasion by a foreign army into Russian territory since the Second World War, a fact that isn't easy to ignore on social media.

Ukraine 's invasion of the Kursk Oblast won't win the war against Russia , and while its forces now control nearly 400 square miles—which on Thursday Kyiv described as a buffer zone—it isn't likely that Ukraine will be able to hold it for long.
"Ukraine's advancement in Kursk has been a pivotal moment in the war between Russia and Ukraine. As social media platforms continue to become the primary source of news, the ongoing offensive by Ukraine will be spun in these spaces, especially by users and collectives that have Russian-centric perspectives," explained Dr. Julianna Kirschner, lecturer at Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California.
The significance of the location can't be overstated either—as it was 81 years ago this summer that the Soviet Red Army defeated Nazi Germany's forces at the Battle of Kursk, which was the largest tank engagement to that point in military history. Germany had hoped to reverse its fortunes but ended up losing the now-infamous battle. Russia is again on the defensive, and it can no more afford to lose this Battle of Kursk than it could in the one in 1943.
This is because the story that the Kremlin advances is always in favor of Russian ideology, including Putin's desire to reunify the Soviet Union.
