Aside from SpaceX’s Elon Musk, arguably the biggest advocate for human Mars exploration has long been Mars Society President Robert Zubrin. An aerospace engineer by training, Zubrin has been preaching the gospel of colonizing and making commercial use of the red planet for decades now.

But Zubrin hopes that with a potential new Harris Administration in the White House that could change. If Harris wanted to do space, she would have the advantage of being a two-term president, says Zubrin. If SpaceX gets Starship operational to orbit this year or early next year, Harris could use a Mars direct approach to astonish the world just as John F. Kennedy did in 1961, he says.

Instead of returning two kg of samples from Mars to earth, you can bring a thousand kg of samples from Mars to the Starship where they could be put under microscopes, says Zubrin. We could do a hundred times as much with a $10 billion robotic expedition to Mars using the Starship, he says. You're exercising the Starship transportation system, doing great Mars exploration while demonstrating the capability to make propellant on Mars, says Zubrin.

We had no idea of how to go to the moon; we had 15 minutes of human space flight experience, says Zubrin. When Kennedy made that speech, we didn't even know people could eat in space, he says. But Kennedy knew that America could do anything, says Zubrin. When Armstrong and Aldrin first stepped out onto the lunar surface, Zubrin, ironically, was visiting the former Soviet Union.
