Ms Abbott, the shadow home secretary, criticised Ms Rudd's choice of words as"outdated, offensive and revealing". Her fellow Labour MP Danielle Rowley claimed Ms Rudd"clearly gets her language from the same bygone era as her abhorrent welfare policies".
Little more than an hour after making the comment, Ms Rudd issued an apology to Ms Abbott on Twitter."My point stands: that no one should suffer abuse because of their race or gender."
