Calderglen High School students raised £500 for the East Kilbride Community Food Bank through a sponsored sports sleepover. The funds were presented at a festive lunch to celebrate the school's Befrienders project, which pairs S6 pupils with elderly members of the community.

Calderglen High School presented East Kilbride Community Food Bank with a £500 donation at a recent festive lunch. S1 and S2 pupils held a sponsored sports sleepover last year, organised by Mr Steve Odger and staff, which raised the funds. The generous donation was handed over to food bank organiser Karen Doran of Calderwood Baptist Church at the special lunch to thank the school's Befrienders for their good work throughout the year.

The Befrienders scheme sees S6 pupils paired up with an elderly member of the community to provide companionship. They have a chat and a cuppa or help with some odd jobs around the house. Some meet at the local supermarket and help carry a weekly shop home and others walk with a dementia sufferer and discuss his early days at work. Both seniors and pupils enjoyed a delicious Christmas lunch prepared by S3 pupils and their teachers. Avril Anderson, the community linchpin who founded Calderglen High School's award-winning befriending project, was honoured as a 'local hero' last August in the presence of The King and Queen to mark 25 years of the Scottish Parliament. At the special celebration event in Holyrood, Avril was recognised for her vital work in the community and was personally congratulated by King Charles III, Queen Camilla and First Minister John Swinney.
