Southern California Edison acknowledges its equipment likely sparked the Hurst Fire, while investigating a possible link to the deadly Eaton Fire.
A Californian utility firm, Southern California Edison (SCE), has admitted that its equipment was likely responsible for sparking the Hurst Fire, one of three blazes that ravaged Los Angeles on January 7. The Hurst Fire, which burned approximately 1.25 square miles (3.2 square km) near Sylmar, did not result in any deaths or structural damage.
SCE's admission came in a required filing with state utility regulators, stating, 'Absent additional evidence, SCE believes its equipment may be associated with the ignition of the Hurst Fire.'\While the utility company has not attributed the deadly Eaton Fire to its equipment, it is investigating the possibility that an idle transmission line became energized and triggered the blaze. The Eaton Fire, which engulfed the Altadena area, resulted in at least 17 deaths and the destruction of entire neighborhoods. Strong winds, reaching 100mph, fueled the rapid spread of the fire, which burned across nearly 14,021 acres.\The cause of the Eaton Fire has been under investigation for weeks. Some emerging evidence suggests the fire originated in dry grasses below a set of transmission towers carrying high-energy power lines. Investigators with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection have declined to comment on their findings thus far. The other blaze that broke out on January 7th, also resulted in deaths and destruction, further highlighting the devastating impact of the wildfires on Los Angeles
