More than 1,300 people backed a petition calling for more public toilets in 2021 and now a Green councillor is hoping to improve availablity.
Providing grants to businesses who let people use their toilets is among proposals to improve access to public facilities in Glasgow.
It follows a petition calling for more toilets in the city, which was backed by over 1,300 people in 2021. Council officials believed there was sufficient provision. It notes that there “are only four toilets operated by the council’s operator Healthmatic and only four toilets maintained across the city’s parks”, and that Glasgow Life venues with public toilets “aren’t operational 24 hours a day”.
If approved, the strategy would consider a small grants fund, similar to Highland Council’s Comfort Scheme, where a contribution towards toilet running costs is given to any firm or organisation which signs up as a provider. Talks could also be held with “vulnerable users, like women, children, disabled and elderly people on their experience of using public toilets”.
