An anthropologist and Aboriginal leader argues that uniform alcohol restrictions are necessary for public health in the Northern Territory to combat domestic violence.
Uniform alcohol restrictions across the Northern Territory should be considered an "absolutely necessary public health measure", according to one of the country's most well-known anthropologists and Aboriginal leaders.
"Herein lies the secret to a whole puzzle; you have to have alcohol restrictions in place at all times, no exceptions," Professor Langton said. "Violence has become so normalised, particularly in the context of exceedingly lax alcohol restrictions in the NT, so over several generations we see violence becoming normalised," Professor Langton."We need to regard alcohol restrictions as a public health measure, an absolutely necessary public health measure … to protect the population," Professor Langton said.
Professor Langton said "culture" and "customary law" was often used as an excuse for those perpetrating violence.
"You can't tackle this problem with $20 million … it's ridiculous, it's not addressing the problem," she said.
