The Attorney General, Lord Hermer, is facing calls to resign after it was revealed he praised disgraced lawyer Phil Shiner, who was later convicted of fraud for pursuing false war crimes allegations against British troops.
Sir Keir Starmer is facing growing pressure to dismiss his top legal advisor, Attorney General Lord Hermer , following revelations that he previously supported disgraced lawyer Phil Shiner. Lord Hermer , a former human rights lawyer, lauded Shiner for his work on 'extraordinarily important cases' that exposed 'systemic use of torture' by the British Army in Iraq, even after a High Court judge-led inquiry dismissed Shiner's war crime allegations against British troops as 'deliberate lies.
'\The unearthed 2015 recording of a legal event highlights the discrepancy between Lord Hermer's praise for Shiner and the unfolding investigation into the lawyer's conduct. At the time, Shiner, who is now a convicted fraudster, was under investigation by the Solicitors Regulation Authority for allegedly paying agents to 'cold call' potential claimants and lodging false claims about the 2004 occupation of Iraq. Some of the wrongly accused individuals endured multiple investigations and even attempted suicide before being cleared. \This revelation has sparked renewed calls for Sir Keir to remove Lord Hermer from his position. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch stated during Prime Minister's Questions, 'If we are serious about protecting our borders, we need to make sure we appoint people who believe in our country and everything we stand for.' Robert Jenrick, a former Tory leadership contender, echoed these sentiments, characterizing Shiner as a 'scumbag' and questioning Lord Hermer's fitness to serve as Attorney General. Despite the mounting criticism, Sir Keir defended Lord Hermer, asserting, 'We’ve long had the principle everybody’s entitled to legal representation. That means lawyers don’t necessarily agree with their clients.' However, the recording, obtained by The Times, appears to suggest that Lord Hermer viewed Shiner as a thorn in the side of the government.
