More than 20 MPs have signed their support for the campaign
A new campaign has been started by a group of MPs, urging the DWP to reconsider its decision to reduce eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment. An early day motion has been established, cautioning that restricting the payment to individuals on specific means-tested benefits, rather than keeping it as a universal benefit for those of state pension age, will negatively affect veterans.
The campaign is calling on the Government to "protect veterans from losing this crucial support by reversing the cuts to the Winter Fuel Payment", with 23 MPs backing the motion at the time of writing. An early day motion is a statement proposed for debate in Parliament. The motion also states that the changes to the Winter Fuel Payment eligibility were "introduced with little notice as the winter months approach, and have been made without a full impact assessment.
To qualify for Pension Credit, which is one of the benefits that make you eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment, your income as a single person must be below £218.15 a week or below £332.95 a week, as the benefit tops up your income to these amounts. Certain individuals may be eligible for a higher cut-off point to claim the benefit, as there are additional payments for certain cases, such as for those with a severe disability or who care for another adult. The motion has primarily been backed by Liberal Democrat MPs, with further support from the Democratic Unionist Party, the SNP and the Green Party. The Winter Fuel Payment is valued at £200 or £300.
