The shared history goes back to the mid-1800s
It is a point of Merseyside pride that Birkenhead Park was the inspiration for world-famous Central Park in New York City. Birkenhead Park opened in 1847 and was the first park to be created by a municipal authority, having been planned as a public health response to a rise in illness and disease as the industrial revolution gathered pace.
