Zara Lachlan, a 21-year-old physics student from Cambridge, has achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the youngest person and the first woman to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean.
A 21-year-old from Cambridge has made history by becoming the first woman and youngest person to row solo from Europe to South America. Zara Lachlan completed her 97-day journey, covering 3,600 nautical miles, on Saturday when she reached French Guiana after setting off from Lagos on the Portuguese Algarve on October 27.
Lachlan, who is studying physics at Loughborough University and will join the Army as a technical officer in September, rowed in aid of Team Forces Foundation and Women in Sport. During her challenging voyage, Lachlan faced numerous obstacles, including battling the elements, encountering sharks and whales, and enduring physical injuries. She cut her leg, injured her arm, broke her finger, and smashed her phone screen. Her boat also capsized, her equipment broke, and she experienced a near miss with a ship. Lachlan admitted that the first month of her journey was incredibly difficult, with constant thoughts of giving up. However, she persevered, determined to complete her goal despite the hardships. Upon reaching French Guiana, Lachlan was greeted by locals curious about her accomplishment and her family, who were overjoyed to see her safe and sound. She celebrated her achievement with a well-deserved sleep in a proper bed and a run, after only being able to take a couple of steps for the past three months. Lachlan shared that while she faced challenges, she also cherished the experience and found it to be a dream come true, loving to exercise and be outdoors. She emphasized the importance of perseverance and not giving up, even when faced with difficulties
