Four athletes took five individual gold and two bronze, two team gold and a team silver in Italy
Cambuslang Harriers athletes Colin Feechan, Dave Thom, Chris Upson and Jacqueline Etherington excelled at the European Track and Non-Stadia Championships in Italy, winning five individual gold, two individual bronze, two team gold and one silver medal.Feechan, who had just turned 65 on the eve of the Championships, won individual gold in the 10,000m track, 8k cross country, 10k road and half-marathon events.
Thom was pipped for the M60 bronze in the 10k road event, while sharing the same time as the bronze medallist, but led the GB team to silver in the team event. Upson was also edged out in the home straight for the M60 1500m bronze, but set a new Scottish age group time.Jacqueline Etherington set a new Scottish age group best time for the 2k steeplechase event, winning bronze.
The four athletes were well supported by GB team managers Archie Jenkins and Lynne Marr, who are also members of Cambuslang Harriers.Stan MacKenzie and Nathalie Brohan came out on top in their respective age groups.MacKenzie lifted the M60 gold medal. More sports news from across Lanarkshire Justin Carter and Erica Christie narrowly missed out on an automatic spot, but were subsequently selected.
U14 Ewan Kennedy took a silver medal over the same distance, as did Brooke Walker in her U13 competition.Colin Donnelly won his third masters age group individual gold medal in the World Mountain Running Championships. Kirsty O’Brien took bronze, though dropped from the silver position due to a calf injury at the eight miles mark.
