Video from May 12 shows a mass of protected shorebirds fleeing the beach at Florida's Edgmont Key State Park as a helicopter makes an illegal landing.
A pilot was hit with multiple citations for landing his helicopter in a nesting site for protected birds in central Florida , authorities said. Video of the illegal touchdown shows a mass of birds fleeing the area as the chopper suddenly descends on part of an island refuge that prohibits visitors.
A witness who reported the incident to wildlife officials — and recorded video of the incident — told the conservation commission that a woman briefly exited the helicopter when it landed on the protected southern beach at Edgmont Key. The woman appeared to take pictures before returning to the helicopter, at which point it left the area, the witness said, according to the incident report.
