In the panic to distance Harris from Biden’s immigration debacle, most Democrats don’t seem to realize that U.S. southern border encounters of migrants from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduraseven as overall encounters have continued to rise. In fiscal year 2021, when Harris began her immigration work, the number of immigrant encounters from those three nations was 701,049. In fiscal year 2023, encounters were down to 495,286. This fiscal year is on track to be even lower.
This is a perfect example of how badly Biden has bungled the 2024 campaign for Democrats. Harris is left with the challenge of touting her policy acumen while avoiding culpability for Biden’s failed policies or concealing Biden’s diminished capacity.
