Either IVF is sinful according to God’s word and should be opposed with the same force and conviction of partial-birth abortions, or it isn’t and should be supported as a viable means to start a family.

The Southern Baptist Convention is dead wrong about in vitro fertilization . Messengers to the annual meeting of the nation’s largest protestant denomination approvedthat threatens the heart of America’s pro-life coalition. The uncertain sound of Baptist leaders in condemning IVF demands a clear, reasoned rebuke.

“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward,” wrote Solomon. Were that not enough, the Apostle Paul reminds us that, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. God’s love for us is unmistakable.Even in a God-ordained marriage, a healthy adult male will release as many as 1.2 billion sperm in a single ejaculation. Most of the time, all of them perish.

Nevertheless, the messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention in Indianapolis recently reaffirmed “the unconditional value and right to life of every human being, including those in an embryonic stage, and to only utilize reproductive technologies consistent with that affirmation especially in the number of embryos generated in the IVF process.”

I’m a Southern Baptist with a nephew conceived through IVF. I have no moral reservations whatsoever about the process. God has given us the scientific capacity to assist in family creation and expansion by taking an embryo that will not grow on its own and implanting it in an otherwise healthy uterus.

I hold ERLC President Brent Leatherwood in high regard. He’s a thoughtful man of high moral character and deep conviction. The aforementioned guidance from his ERLC staff fails to meet that standard. It’s church speak for “we can’t say for certain that IVF is sinful, but let’s oppose it anyway just to be safe.” Such a posture would deny countless Christians the opportunity to start families, condemn those who have sought IVF treatment, and fracture the pro-life movement.
