Zambia lead-poisoning lawsuit has gone to appeal

An event hosted at the UK Parliament this week called on Anglo American to "answer for its toxic legacy" in Kabwe, Zambia.The company was involved with the Kabwe lead mine from 1925 to 1974. A class action suit has been filed in South Africa against Anglo for lead poisoning that they say was a result of the mining operations.The case has now gone to appeal and a court date for next year is expected to be announced soon.

Leigh Day has previously represented former miners against AASA and AngloAshanti over silicosis, a lung disease caused by exposure to dust particles.Twelve claimants will act as representatives for the estimated 140,000 women and children affected by the lead contamination.Speaking at the event, Leigh Day partner Richard Meeran said: "The claimants are confident we will win on appeal.
