Liverpool City Region could become the second area outside London to run its own buses next week

Campaigners, bus operators and local authorities have given their verdict on the consultation backing a move to bring buses back into public control across the Liverpool City Region.

Among those to respond were bus operator Arriva. According to a report on the results of the consultation, it said the firm “would support franchising but do not believe that the CA had fully appreciated the benefits of an Enhanced Partnership .” Among those supporting the proposed move included Matthew Topham, campaigner at Better Buses for Merseyside. He said: “It’s great to see that an effective supermajority of Merseyside residents have backed the plans to get our buses back in the fast lane alongside Greater Manchester.

This was a stance shared by Sefton Council who said information around declining patronage and measures such as a green bus routes was required to “inform future judgements on value for money.” In Wirral, the council said detailed financial and affordability assessment were required and in addition to pursuing additional government funding, the CA should explore “alternative ways to generate income before passing costs onto residents.
