Protesters gathered at a Lisburn and Castlereagh council meeting to express concerns over potential mandatory vaccinations outlined in the proposed Public Health bill for Northern Ireland.
Campaigners have staged a demonstration at a Council meeting amid concerns over “enforced vaccinations”.
Announcing the extension to the consultation, Health Minister Mike Nesbitt said: “As we seek to replace outdated legislation, it is important that we consider all options. I am not in favour of mandatory vaccination even in limited and tightly prescribed circumstances. Nevertheless, it is right that we have a public conversation about all potential options in the public consultation, as we decide what should be in the final Bill to protect us all.
At Wednesday evening’s meeting, the Lisburn and Castlereagh Community Trust were denied an opportunity to speak. In a council letter seen by the Local Democracy Reporting Service , the LCCT group was told by council CEO David Burns: “No opportunity will be provided to you to make representation at the committee.”
In a statement issued subsequently, they added: “The Bill proposals strip both local councils and other departments of their authority to manage local health responses. Poor communication of the consultation process, combined with inadequate public engagement and a lack of clear information ‘accessible’ for all people makes this consultation undemocratic, further undermining trust and transparency in public health policy making.
The officer’s report had recommended approval of the LCCC consultation draft response to the DoH. However, Killultagh DUP Alderman, James Tinsely said: “On reflection on this consultation in more detail, I have found that there are some alarming things that I myself and other community members find unacceptable. There are too many points that I am not comfortable with. I propose that we respond to this consultation as individual parties.
