They say more needs to be done - and faster
Air quality in Erewash is said to be improving but campaigners are not convinced that enough is being done – or fast enough. A map displaying Erewash’s current air quality levels shows a symphony of fluorescent green, indicating rates of nitrogen dioxide which are “very low for the UK”.
They said: “My concerns about air quality in Ilkeston and Long Eaton stem from an awareness gained following some research about engine idling. I see this a lot, as it’s very prevalent outside the obvious places, schools, shops, hospitals, level crossings - but also when people are sitting at traffic lights and in congestion. Research showed how widespread and serious the problem was and how poor the air quality is in Erewash.
“It is very worrying that a planning authority would grant permission to a project which can only worsen air quality, on top of the obvious concerns about creating environments where people are encouraged to eat junk food, not exercise, not reduce car use.” “That should have got better as we improve technology but we still have an issue with transport pollution and in particular the fine particulates which cause the huge problems in lung development of children. The Government took it off the watchlist in 2022, satisfied, but it still breaks international expectations.
“We can’t damage our environment and expect it not to impact the health of people. Some people in our community will have died due to air quality.” “We also have a real time nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter sensor in Long Eaton and also one in Ilkeston. The results for all our monitoring consistently shows that air quality in Erewash is not just within national air quality standards but is improving.
