The groups say the polluted water from the Maumee River flows into Lake Erie and causes toxic algal blooms.
The lawsuits allege that the Campbell Soup facility in Napoleon has been violating permits for dumping waste into the Maumee River for at least five years. from the Department of Justice on behalf of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the other from the National Environmental Law Center on behalf of Environment America and Lake Erie Waterkeeper.
"The Campbell Soup plant that discharges into the Maumee River is one of the largest industrial sources of phosphorous with an actual permit to pollute," said John Rumpler, spokesperson for plaintiff Environment America.
