Why is this so necessary? Because Section 230 has protected companies even when they were aware that child predators were using their sites to target children, even when they were aware that they were connecting drug dealers with children who went on to overdose, even when they knew that a serial rapist was using their sites to target more victims, even when they directed people contemplating suicide to content showing them how to kill themselves.
It’s the sort of policy we needed years ago, a chance to reimagine the regulatory frame that the internet operates under.“For years, lawmakers have made efforts to reform Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, but have faced relentless opposition. Failure to revisit and reform this law is both irresponsible and untenable,” McMorris Rodgers and Pallone said in a joint statement earlier this month.
But social media companies have enjoyed a carve-out that they can point to as a get-out-of-court-free card. It has been a right they have abused repeatedly to the great harm of our society.
