Lemon water has a reputation for being a weight loss beverage. But is it any better than simply drinking plain water?

Lauren Manaker is an award-winning registered dietitian, book author, speaker, and entrepreneur. She has been practicing dietetics since 2004, and has worked in a wide variety of settings. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Florida, a master's degree in clinical nutrition from Rush University, and she completed her dietetic internship through the Rush University Medical Center system in Chicago.

Lemon contains vitamin C and can add healthy flavoring to water, so the drink can certainly be a healthy part of a person’s diet. But should lemon water really be your go-to beverage if you want to manage your weight? Or is it yet another pseudo-wellness trend that isn’t worth it?Starting the day with a glass of lemon water has become a popular morning ritual for many people, even before their first sip of coffee.

“When one 2008 Japanese study linked antioxidants in lemon to less weight gain , public interest in this practice increased,” Mitri explained. Some believe that the acid in the lemons “breaks down” fat cells. However, there’s little evidence to support this theory.

While lemon water specifically doesn’t have research to back up any purported benefits, lemon juice itself may be beneficial.
