Fisher spent the last eight months trying to evolve from a head coach who loved calling plays into a different kind of leader.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas — On Jan. 6, 2014, Jimbo Fisher stood at midfield of the Rose Bowl and raised a crystal football in triumph after leadingAlmost a decade later, Fisher is still trying to return to the mountaintop, having traded FSU’s garnet and gold for Texas A&M’s maroon and white.
Giving that up wasn’t something Fisher was eager to do, at least heading into last season. In July 2022, when asked if he could envision surrendering play-calling duties, Fisher said, “Could that happen? Yes. But not right now.” It wasn’t a one-off, either. In three of Fisher’s five seasons at A&M, the Aggies have averaged fewer than 30 points per game. Their two most productive seasons in the Fisher era were his 2018 debut, when Texas A&M averaged 36.6 points per game, and 2020, when the Aggies averaged 32.6 points per game. The Aggies went 9-1 in that pandemic-altered year, narrowly missed the Playoff and finished No. 4 in the AP poll.
“I’ve been calling the plays out at practice and I will do that,” Petrino said on Aug. 6. “I get to go out in the game and decide on what play to call, and when they boo and it’s a bad call, that’s my fault.” Fisher said he has devoted more time to administrative tasks, like recruiting, communicating with boosters and donors and even sitting in defensive and special teams meetings. The shift in his role has allowed for more time to meet individually with players. But he is still involved with the offense.
