A new review in Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology analyzes the evidence surrounding probiotics and their ability to restore the gut microbiota after antibiotic treatment. Eight scientists with expertise in various fields, including clinical medicine, biostatistics, microbiome science, and probiotic microbiology, reviewed the current research. Their findings reveal a lack of studies directly addressing whether probiotics can fully restore the gut microbiota to its pre-antibiotic state. While some studies suggest certain probiotics can mitigate functional changes in the microbiome caused by antibiotics, data on the restoration of microbial composition is limited and often suffers from methodological flaws.
