Warriors superstar Stephen Curry is a talented and amiable person, so a comedy show would seem a slam-dunk — but comedic acting isn’t as easy as it looks.
He has four NBA championship rings wrapped around his nimble fingers and is idolized everywhere for what he accomplishes on and off the basketball courts. But can one of the Bay Area’s most renowned resident’s surmount yet another daunting feat: comedic acting?
What makes Curry’s transition smooth and successful is that the Golden State Warriors lands a role that fits him snugly: playing himself. And he is – as you’d expect and hope – absolutely charming and funny in this carefully crafted production that wisely chooses to put him on a home team surrounded by other very funny actors – in particular “SNL’s” Ego Nwodim , Adam Pally from the underrated, defunct ABC series “Happy Endings” and Ayden Mayeri .
The plot’s set into motion when in a fit of financial desperation, Curry’s less successful childhood friend Danny Grossman – a Chicago sports memorabilia store owner who is the definition of a hot mess – taps the Warriors point guard for $90,000 debt he needs to pay up pronto. He asks for it at the Chase Center after a game.
“Mr. Throwback” ribs Curry’s image and includes some inner circle references that make you chuckle, including a made-up feud between him and the singer Drake. There are also funny moments when Warriors coach Steve Kerr gets interviewed, and some Bay Area scenery from San Francisco to Palo Alto. A funny bit on the development of a YA “Young Steph” series lampoons “celeb branded” shows that also feels on point.
