We became far too involved in each other’s decision-making and bored our partners with constant updates about one another’s lives. “She’s not Taylor Swift!” her other half once told her, exasperated. As a pair, we thought we were hilarious; no one else had to, because we did. We were also shockingly honest.
When Anna moved back to London, three years into our friendship, we each felt briefly, ridiculously bereft. She had argued to stay in Manchester until her partner forced her to acknowledge that the main reason she was doing so was me. We still spend our commutes on the phone, staying on the call as the lift door to her floor or mine closes.
