Holidaymakers and residents in the Canary Islands are advised to exercise caution near coastlines due to yellow alerts issued by Spain's weather agency Aemet. The alerts warn of significant swells of up to five meters, prompting caution and adherence to warning flags on beaches.
Holidaymakers in the Canary Islands are being advised to exercise caution in coastal areas as yellow alerts have been issued by Spain's weather agency Aemet . The warnings, which come into force in the early hours of Tuesday, January 21, and last until midnight, cover the entire coastlines of El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote. The northern coastlines of Tenerife and Gran Canaria are also under yellow alerts.
Aemet warns of swells of 'four to five meters,' urging both residents and tourists in coastal areas to 'exercise caution' and follow the colors of warning flags on beaches. Yellow flags indicate moderate sea conditions, while red flags signal that swimming is not permitted. People are urged to stay updated on weather forecasts and avoid 'unnecessary activities' near the coastline while the warnings are in effect. Aemet predicts overcast conditions with light rain for the Canary Islands this week. Strong winds are expected in parts of Tenerife and La Palma, likely contributing to the rough sea conditions. Predicting the weather for Tuesday, Aemet said: “Strong southwesterly wind on the peaks of Tenerife, with westerly wind on the peaks of La Palma, with very strong gusts.” Forecasters added: “During the first half of the day, cloudy or overcast in the western province and in the southwest of Gran Canaria, with probable light to moderate rainfall, especially on the southern and western slopes, less probable in Gran Canaria. Cloudy intervals in the rest of the areas. In the afternoon, wide clearings and generally weak rainfall not ruled out in the mountainous islands. Cloudy intervals in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Minimum temperatures slightly rising. Maximum temperatures with little change. Wind from the southwest or west, moderate with intervals of strong on the northwest and southeast slopes, as well as in high areas. On the peaks of Tenerife and La Palma, strong wind with very strong gusts.
