ANALYSIS: Canberra's population centre has crossed Lake Burley Griffin for the first time
A generation ago, as the then new district of Tuggeranong boomed, the ACT's population centre was midway between the inner south and Woden Valley — and inching further south. This century, Gungahlin's development pulled the centre north. It reached speeds of about 73 centimetres a day as it charged through Yarralumla and Weston Park.
It entered Lake Burley Griffin about the time the COVID-19 pandemic began. It spent three years crossing the water before taking its first step into north Canberra. From here, the pull of Molonglo , Ginninderry , and the inner-northern suburbs will gradually slow it down until it's barely moving at all.But they're accurate enough to locate Canberra's demographic centre to within a stone's throw, even when we use areas as large as suburbs to calculate it.
The map above shows the centre's position calculated from Bureau of Statistics suburb estimates , and also from census "mesh blocks", which are much smaller than suburbs and therefore more accurate. The ACT Treasury said last week that, from now,This will not only help the government plan services more effectively, it will allow us to keep a precise tab on Canberra's heart as it continues its journey to the north.
