The woman was charged with eight child neglect offences that were dismissed on mental health grounds, but was convicted of two animal neglect charges and banned from owning animals for three years.
A court has heard a woman's children would go hungry or eat "floor food" after a maintenance worker reported finding the family's house in squalor.
The shocking details were revealed in court documents tendered in the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday where a Canberra mother faced a string of child and animal neglect offences. They were dismissed on mental health grounds, but she was convicted on two animal neglect offences, and handed a three-year ban on caring for animals and a 12-month good behaviour bond.
One frontline worker described it as "the worst house of squalor" she had seen in her 20-year career, the documents said.A maintenance worker tasked with fixing a water leak at the property said he "began gagging due to the smell of rotten food, faeces, and required a second face mask", according to the documents.
ACT Policing executed search warrants at the hotel after observing the children being visibly dirty and "freezing" with inadequate clothing, court documents showed. The carcass of one of the animals was later found at the property on an outdoor air conditioning unit.
