The FDA has banned Red No 3, a synthetic red dye found in thousands of food and drink products, after studies linked it to cancer in laboratory rats.

A synthetic red dye widely used in thousands of food and drink products in the US has been banned after being linked to cancer. The Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ) revoked the authorization for Red No 3 on Wednesday, citing two studies that showed cancer in laboratory rats exposed to it.

The additive is found in over 9,200 food products, including many made by large companies, according to the Center for Science in Public Interest (CSPI), a food safety advocacy group that called for the FDA to investigate in 2022. These products range from candies and cakes to frozen desserts, frostings, beverages, cereals, and dietary supplements. \'The FDA cannot authorize a food additive or color additive if it has been found to cause cancer in humans or animals,' stated Jim Jones, the FDA’s deputy director for human foods. 'Evidence shows cancer in laboratory male rats exposed to high levels of FD&C Red No. 3.' The FDA acknowledged that the way the dye caused cancer in male rats 'does not occur in humans' and that human exposure levels to the additive are 'typically much lower than those that cause the effects shown in male rats.' \Some food companies have already stopped using Red Dye No 3, such as Just Born, the maker of Peeps, which hasn't used the dye since Easter 2020. CSPI President Dr. Peter Lurie celebrated the FDA’s decision, stating, 'At long last, the FDA is ending the regulatory paradox of Red 3 being illegal for use in lipstick, but perfectly legal to feed to children in the form of candy.' He added, 'It removes an unnecessary hazard from the American food supply, and we welcome that action, even though it should have occurred more than three decades ago.' Red No 3, made from petroleum, was approved for food use in 1907. This ban comes more than three years after Johnson & Johnson recalled five aerosol sunscreen products found to contain a cancer-causing chemical
