The Government and NHS England‘s plan to introduce new targets for patients to have cancer ruled out or diagnosed is meaningless until referrals are improved, a patient has told theipaper AlannahFrancis1 reports
, GPs spot those ones quite quickly and you can often be referred quickly. But with something more obscure, like blood cancer, like myeloma, or some of the other kind of lesser known cancers, often your symptoms can be confused for other illnesses.”
Both Ms Myers and Ms O’Fee said once they received their diagnoses they started treatment quickly, in Ms O’Fee’s case “almost instantly”.They raised concerns about the proposed target time between referral and treatment.“You need either to draw a line under it and move on and get on with your life because you know that you’re going to be fine or you’re going to need treatment, but the treatment will start, hopefully, quite quickly.
“For years now, Myeloma UK has been really keen to see the introduction of a Best Practice Timed Pathway for blood cancer, clearly setting out the various tests, checks and scans that should be carried out once a patient has been given an urgent hospital referral to ensure they get the right diagnosis and start treatment straightaway.
