The doctor explained that the cancer red flag often results in an uncomfortable or even painful sensation in your hands and feet.
As the colder months edge closer, you may notice it becomes a little more difficult to keep cosy. But if your hands and feet are particularly hard to keep at a comfortable temperature, this may be a symptom of the disease, a doctor has warned.
Dr Lee said: “In a healthy person, the body’s automatic temperature control mechanisms keep the body temperature between 36.5 to 37C. But this relies on efficient mitochondria, tiny organelles inside every cell where energy is produced, creating a robust energy supply. In cancer cells, the mechanism of mitochondrial energy production is disrupted.”
Cancer patients can experience cold fingers and toes as well as an overall chill in their hands and feet, even in temperatures where others feel quite comfortable. This is due to the body being unable to remain at the correct temperature in certain parts, the doctor explained. Dr Lee said: “Chemotherapy can cause fatigue, dehydration and anaemia – all of which can make a cancer patient feel the cold.”
